| ) (Electronics) Mine's black or rather, guatemnl grey with a light magnesium chassis. I wanted a laptop capable of running photo-editing software that was small enough to take on holiday with a decent screen (though no LCD screens are really that suited to photo-editing due to the apparent brightness changing vertically, even LED backlit ones as here.) The keyboard is backlit when the ambient lighting falls below a certain level which was one reason for my purchase apart from the speed of the i5 processor & general qualiy. The key action is fairly neutral though they do have a springy sound a trivial point! The screen is good shiny, with a native resolution of 1366 x 768 not 1080! The RAM is 2x 2G so check that 4G is suitable 1st at least the bundled 64bit version of Windows7 Pro will see the entire amount. The package includes a WinXP Pro downgrade disc. There's the usual bloatware that I hate (I personally would prefer discs & nothing installed apart from the OS & necessary drivers with no hidden partitions.) There are 2 custom buttons: the Vaio one mutes/un-mutes sound & the Assist one either brings up the Sony Recovery application within Windows or boots into it when switched off. The hard disc is large at 500GB but only spins at 5400rpm. The supplied battery is good for around 3hrs & a bigger one good for around 5hrs at a price fitting it will raise up the rear a little. The bundled Roxio software takes care of burning CDRs & DVDs. The release button is on the far right front panel, the 2 3.5mm jacks next then the wireless On/Off slide switch I don't particularly like McAfee AV or anything by Norton I downloaded an app to rid this laptop of the AV so I could install ESET 64bit low resource usage. MS Office 2007 Pro 60 day trial is installed. It wouldn't take my Home/Student key, however. I presume that one can upgrade to Office 2010 for free (there's no Office 2010 upgrade otherwise!!!?) Being a Sony, there's a Memory Stick port as well as SDHD, though no CF, unsurprisingly. There are 3 USM & a single Firewire port. The nVidia graphics will drive an external monitor up to fairly high resolutions. The internal audio quality is best described as adequate but through a good pair of phones, matches a good MP3 player. Wireless connectivity iw well catered for WiFi up to n, Bluetooth 2.1 & fast 3G built-in internally with an Orange SIM already installed. The only trouble I haven't resolved yet is getting my iPhone 3GS to tether over Bluetooth. Is it worth paying so much for? I thought so! One aspect that to me, at least, ices the cake & that I wasn't aware of at purchase is the fingerprint reader that I mistook for a catch! No more password entry even log-on with a swipe. You can now have a long & strong log-in password as a back door. Any gripes? The back of the lid flexes inwards a little! Win 7 s benchmark gave the following results: Dual core 520 i5 processor 6.8 2x 2G RAM 5.9 nVidea graphics running Aero 5.0 3D gaming 6.1 500GB 5400rpm hard disc 5.6 Overall score 5.0 | |
